2017 is the year to start a big step in creating an EU-wide level playing field for national competition authorities when applying Art. 101 and 102 of the Treaty. The European Commission’s proposal for a Directive aims at making the national competition authorities also more effective enforcers ‒ the so-called „ECN+“. This is without doubts a key development in competition policy. The European Competition Network has certainly been a successful model of cooperation so far ‒ but unfortunately with some weaknesses that we’ll fix now! It needs fine-tuning to unfold all its potential. As rapporteur of the European Parliament, my aim is to empower national competition authorities, but at the same time providing legal certainty and respect of fundamental safeguards for undertakings.
